What is a direct object?
A direct object in a sentence is a noun that receives the action of the verb.
For example:
John put his pen on the table.
She typed the notes from the meeting.
Did he write the company report or did his assistant?
The laboratory needs to buy some more chemicals.
Notice that in each case, pen, notes, report, and chemicals something is happening directly to the word.
