Being involved in the community means volunteering our time to help other people. The first immediate benefit of community involvement is the chance to meet new people and to feel useful. It might be a chance to use skills or a chance to learn new skills.
Many organizations offer opportunities for volunteers. There are food banks which distribute food to people in need, there are programs to visit the elderly and programs to help people who are handicapped. A single mother might need a day of babysitting so that she can do other things, or an elderly person might need some help around the house. An organization which works with homeless people might need help distributing clothes or blankets in the winter.
At first, helping other people can help us to feel better about ourselves. But learning new skills means we have skills that we can use in our own lives. Community service can be part of a university application which shows you do more than just study. Learning to help people is a useful skill that can serve us all of our lives.
