Which one to use: I or me?

It's a common mistake that student make - the correct use of I or me.  So, how do you know?

Consider the following two sentences; only one (1) sentence is correct.  Which one is it?

  1. Bill and I went to the beach. 
  2. Bill and me went to the beach.
