What is the TOEIC test?

The TOEIC is the Test of English for International Communication. It is written by ETS, Educational Testing Services and has existed for 30 years. 

The focus of the TOEIC is business communications. The candidate has to have a good vocabulary of business words in order to have a high score on the TOEIC.

There are two exams. The most used is the Listening and Reading exam.  They take 2 hours to complete.

Listening

Section 1    Photographs
Section 2    Questions - choose the right response
Section 3    Conversations - understand the content
Section 4    Short talks (one speaker) - understand the content

Reading

Section 5  Grammar - complete the sentences with the best word
Section 6  Text completion and grammar - short letters, emails, advertisements
Section 7  Reading comprehension - answer questions about a text

This exam is evaluated by levels, associated with a color:

  •        Orange (10–219)
  •        Brown (220–469)
  •        Green (470–729)
  •        Blue (730–859)
  •        Gold (860–990)

There is also a Speaking and Writing exam. This exam is usually optional, but some employers require it to test these two skills.  The combined tests take around 90 minutes to complete.

Speaking

The following skills are tested: read a text out loud, describe a picture, respond to questions, propose a solution, and express an opinion.


Writing

The following skills are tested: writing sentences based on pictures, responding to a request for information, and giving an opinion.


Both the Speaking and Writing exams are evaluated on a scale of 0 - 200.
