There are a lot of words in English which can express saddness.  Here are our top five :( 

1. Devastated
  • Judy was devastated by the death of her husband.

2. Heartbroken
  • Bill was heartbroken when his girlfriend said 'goodbye'.

3. Grief-stricken
  • The death of a pet can make a person feel grief-stricken.

4. Melancholy
  • I have always enjoyed Schumann's Kinderszenen Op.15-10 it's both moving and melancholy.

5. Grief
  • Her English test result filled her with grief.
