In your IELTS Writing Task 2 test, you will be assessed in 4 key areas:

1. Task Achievement
2. Grammar
3. Vocabulary
4. Coherence and cohesion

To score high in Task Achievement you must be sure to write about the topic.  Notice the following past IELTS question:

High school graduates should take a year to travel before attending university.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

What is the topic of this question?  Is it:

A. travel
B. university
c. high school
d. what to do after graduation

Hopefully you see that 'D' is the correct answer!

So, how can you begin your answer?  Well, your first sentence should be a general statement about the topic.  What do I mean by 'general statement'?  I mean that no one would disagree with what you write.

Consider the question again:

High school graduates should take a year to travel before attending university.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

What would be a suitable introduction to this essay?  Can you write a general statement about the topic?

Please write a suitable sentence below.
