IELTS Task 1: Words to use in the introduction instead of 'shows'.

In most IELTS Task 1 questions, you will see a statement like:

The line graph / bar graph / charts show(s) the number of people studying in adult education.

In an attempt to paraphrase the introduction, students typically use a different word for ‘shows’.  Sometimes, the word they choose is not suitable (eg: illustrates or demonstrates).  Below are a few suggestions for phrases you can use instead of using ‘shows’  B).


  • The bar graph provides information/data about
  • The line graph gives information about
  • The table provides details in relation to
  • The tables give details about
  • The diagram illustrates
