In the TOEFL test, you will notice three or four words which have a grey box around them.  These are special vocabulary words that you need to define.

Here's a key: you don't need to read the whole passage to answer most of these kinds of questions!

Simply, read the shaded vocabulary word and then read the four answer choices to the question.  In most cases, you should be able to identify the word that means the same (synonym) without reading the text - an obvious time-saving strategy!
