IELTS Academic Task 1: What do I have to do?

A lot of students have difficulty with knowing what to do in IELTS Academic Task 1.

Here's what I tell all my students:

Don't begin writing immediately! You have 20 minutes to write and you should spend about 2 minutes planning what to write.  Look carefully at the graph, table or diagram (maps, flow-chart) and look for the most interesting details that you can see.  In a graph, it might be a high point or a low point or two lines that show a similar pattern of growth or decline. In a table it might be numbers that are very similar or very different.  In a diagram it might be significant differences between two maps or flow charts.

Important: make sure that the data you describe is ONLY the data you can see.  If you speculate about why you think something is or is not, you will lose points!

Once you have decided what you want to write about, start writing!  Your Task 1 IELTS Academic answer must include the following:

  1. an introduction
  2. body paragraphs
  3. a summary statement - not a conclusion.
