What is the TOEFL writing test?
There are two tasks on the TOEFL writing test. The first task is only found on the TOEFL test, and combines reading, listening and writing. Via the computer, candidates first read an article and then listen to a lecture about the same subject as the article. You make take notes on the article and during the listening. Then, the article reappears on the screen (you can re-read the article) and you have 20 minutes to answer a question about the subject of the article and the lecture. Often you are asked to summarize them, compare them or contrast them. Normally you need to write about 200 words. The second section is a standard essay question. You will see a question and will need to respond to that question in 300 words. The questions will often ask you to state your opinion on a topic. The examiners are looking for good grammar, organisation, and a rich vocabulary.
