Do not be afraid to use metaphors and similes in your writing!

First, what is the difference?

Metaphors and similes are figures of speech which you can use to make your writing more alive.

A metaphor is direct, for example, "She is a bear in the morning until she has coffee."
A simile uses like or as to compare two items, "He is big and tough, but inside he is tender as a pussycat."

Choose whether the following sentences use a metaphor or a simile.

1. His long arms make him walk like an ape.
2. She is sharp as a knife in business, so be careful.
3. Unfortunately, he's a pig about cleaning his room, but he is a nice guy.
4. They are very waspish and like to gossip together.
5. The point of the presentation was clear as mud.
6. The sky is a hot, wet blanket in the rainy season.
