Do you know how to use former and latter?

These two words are a formal way of expressing 'the first and the last'.

Consider this sentence:
I was offered two kinds of meals, chicken and vegetarian.  I chose the latter.

Which one did I choose?  Well, if I chose the latter, then this means I chose the last one mentioned - the vegetarian option.

How about this sentence:
He suggested we go to the movies or bowling and I chose the former.

Which one did he choose?  In this case, the first (former) one mentioned was movies.

Now, let's consider 'former and latter' in the context of describing a table.

Consider the table below.  Can you write a sentence using former and latter?  Please post your answers below for the benefit of other students.
