Words Students Confuse: Among and Between

Students often have difficulty with the words among (or amongst) and between. They are both used when talking about a group of people.

The distinction that students need to remember is that between is always used for two things, while among is used for three or more.

For example, "I cannot choose between the two schools. Both are very good." "Put the cheese between the two pieces of bread to make a sandwich."

"She was the best choice among all of the candidates for the position." "The fish swam among the rocks in the clear stream."

Put among or between in the sentences below:

1. ___________________ all of my cds, this is the one I like the best.
2. Just __________________ you and me, this class is very boring.
3. Which would you choose ________________ investing in stocks or a savings account?
4. It is hard to see the bird _________________ all of the leaves, but it's there.
5. __________________ our two chickens, Little Red is the better layer.
6. I can't decide ___________________ all of the ice cream flavours!
