What is a direct object?

direct object in a sentence is a noun that receives the action of the verb.

For example:

John put his pen on the table.
She typed the notes from the meeting.
Did he write the company report or did his assistant?
The laboratory needs to buy some more chemicals.

Notice that in each case, pennotesreport, and chemicals something is happening directly to the word.

Select the direct object in each of the following sentences:

The company produces clothing for the European market.
Italy sells more wine than France, but the quality is lower.
Gina forgot the meeting on Friday morning.
Will the new law affect our business plan?
